Auslogics Disk Defrag 3.2 gets smarter, faster

auslogics defrag
Auslogics Disk Defrag has been part of my system maintenance toolkit for quite some time. With the release of version 3.2, it’s now even better at tidying up and optimizing your system’s hard disk drives. In addition to a cleaner, easier-to-use interface, Disk Defrag 3.2 offers improved single file and folder defragging, better processing of multiple disks, a simplified scheduling screen, and more informative tool tips. Auslogics has also fine-tuned the program’s defragmentation and file consolidation algorithms.

For laptop users, there’s a new option to lock the program if your system is running on battery power — so scheduled operations don’t kick in and drain your power source at an inopportune moment. If you happen to have an SSD installed in your PC, you can head to the Disk Defrag options and exclude it from scanning (many think that defragmenting an SSD is a very bad idea).

Auslogics Disk Defrag is a free download and works with most versions of Windows.

Kia to roll out re-badged Hyundai electric minicar in late 2011

There’s still no indication that it’ll hit the North American market, but it looks like Kia will soon have an all-electric “minicar” to call its own. That will come in the form of a re-badged Hyundai i10 (pictured above), which is expected to pack a 16-kWh lithium-ion battery and a range somewhere south of a hundred miles. No word on pricing just yet either, but the car is set to roll out in late 2011, with production tapped at a modest 2,000 units for 2012.

windows 8 wallpaper

With Windows 8 milestone 3 now up for grabs for select Microsoft Connect partners, it’s inevitable that leaked bits and pieces will start popping up around the Web. In fact, the first “official” wallpaper image from the still-brewing OS is already making the rounds.

As you can see, it’s got a similar feel to the good ol’ Windows 7 default background, but features a more subdued smattering of cerulean hues. Those of you who want to use the Windows 8 wallpaper on your current desktop can download it from our file dump.

A few other details have been revealed, too. According to ZDNet’s source, the Windows 8 Jupiter libraries and Twin UI are starting to take shape — though all that’s been located thus far are “[various files] scattered throughout the OS” and the aptly-named twinui.dll.

Apple keeps coming with the news from its “Let’s talk iPhone” event, and the latest is a price drop for its diminutive PMP, the nano. From now on, you’ll be forking over $129 for an 8GB version and $149 for twice the tunage space. Additionally, Cupertino’s tossing in big icons — as opposed to the grid of 4 that was the only option previously — 16 new clocks (Mickey Mouse included!) to go with all those fabulous watch accessories, and workout tracking abilities right out of the box so you no longer need a Nike+ shoe dongle to see how many calories you’ve burned. Not bad for a little guy, eh? Full PR after the break.

Apple rejects Samsung’s settlement offer in Australia, seeks to ‘maintain the status quo’

“Thanks, but no thanks.” That’s essentially what Apple told Samsung today, in rejecting an offer to end their ongoing patent dispute in Australia. Samsung’s proposed settlement, presented on Friday, would’ve allowed the manufacturer to sell its Galaxy Tab 10.1 within Australia as early as this week, despite Apple’s contention that the tablet infringes upon a handful of its patents. The agreement would’ve also resulted in a speedy court decision, but today, Cupertino told an Australian court that the proposal was simply unacceptable. “It is one we don’t accept and there is no surprise,” Apple attorney Steven Burley told reporters. “The main reason we are here is to prevent the launch and maintain the status quo.” Samsung’s lawyers, meanwhile, acknowledged that the rejection now lessens the chances for any settlement at all, arguing that a truce “is not going to be achievable… given the positions advanced by each party,” and that the litigation may extend well into 2012. One of the Samsung’s attorneys, Neil Young, added that his client isn’t in a rush to conclude the dispute, speculating that it may take until March to prepare its defense. “If we can’t get a decision out by mid-October, there is no urgency,” Young explained. Neither Samsung nor Apple have offered official comment on today’s developments, but we’ll keep you abreast of the latest.

Gargantuan SQL injection infects 3.8 million URLs, installs rogue antivirus

LizaMoon SQL injection rogue AV

Over the last few days, a mass SQL injection attack has been quickly gathering speed. Just three days ago only 28,000 URLs were affected, but at the time of writing, there could be up to 3.8 million infected URLs.

Websense
has a complete write up the attack, dubbed ‘LizaMoon,’ but here’s the basic gist: it looks like someone is exploiting a vulnerabilty (or vulnerabilities) in hundreds of thousands of websites running on Microsoft SQL Server 2003 and 2005. It’s not yet known whether this is a vulnerability in SQL Server, or simply a case of outdated, unmaintained, and easily-exploitable CMSes.

The attack takes the form of an SQL injection, which then inserts a link to a JavaScript file hosted on the attacker’s server. This is repeated over and over until every Web page in the SQL database has been infected — and considering 3.8 million URLs have been infected, you can see that this is a very easy, and automated, attack.

Fortunately, the JavaScript isn’t particularly malicious: it pops up a rogue AV program called Windows Stability Center, but that’s it. Better yet, the rogue antivirus is already recognized by a bunch of real antivirus suites, including Avast, Panda and Microsoft Security Essentials.

The real problem with SQL injection attacks is that there’s nothing we surfers can do about them. There will always be old and unmaintained websites, and thus SQL injections will remain one of the easiest and most lucrative tools of hackers and spammers alike. All you can do is keep your antivirus and anti-malware software up to date, and pray.

Speedtest.net overhauled with new look, new features

speedtest

Speedtest.net is pretty much the go-to site for quickly figuring out how fast (or slow) your connection really is and comparing the numbers your ISP boasts with what it actually delivers. And now it’s got a new coat of paint and a couple of neat features. In brief:

  • New UI: The map widget is much improved; it actually looks like a map now, and it’s easy to see where you are.
  • Smart server selection: If there are several test servers nearby, Speedtest will now ping each to see which has the least latency and use that for the test. You can still specify servers manually, too.
  • User accounts: You can sign up for a free account and aggregate results from several computers/connections.
  • Speed Wave: This new feature lets you add your test results to the results of many other users, and get a nice composite view.

All in all, you get some nice, new functionality and a snazzier interface to boot. Nice!

Procedures to Internationalization

Sep24

Written by admin

Are you aware what international diversification is? Maybe you have ever been made aware of sovereign diversification?

Sovereign diversification is a fairly new idea to the world, although it has already been acknowledged as well as utilized for a long time by affluent folks. When we mention diversification in general, stocks and shares by way of example, it is all about not necessarily applying all of your funds within just one stock, or even “Not putting every one of your eggs within a single basket”.

Sovereign diversification is just the very same, but rather than stocks and shares or even companies, it comes down to countries around the world. See, in case you have all of your assets in one country and that country has a total collapse, or even the govt of that country decides it demands to take your current financial assets, you are in serious trouble. Like businesses can go broke nations around the world can also go bankrupt, just seriously look into Argentina and the way it has worked out ever since it deteriorated.

In the event the turmoil comes to your own country, which it will in the end, it’s actually a bad strategy to have your personal savings within your country, hinge on an cash flow solely from inside the country, anticipating your loved ones to be safe in the country.

What things can a person carry out to diversify globally? It is possible to create resources for cash flow internationally, skip the domestic stock exchange and spend money on better stores of value outside your own nation, holding gold for instance, you might purchase a small piece of farming land inside a safer place, and look for locations having less costly but much better health care.

Allow me to share a few actions you could start taking now to get started with sovereign diversification:

An extra passport is a very valuable insurance plan in the event of political chaos, social unrest or even if someone sues you for all you’ve got. Should you only possess one passport and a single citizenship you are at the mercy of that government. If they attempt to imprison you or confiscate your own property and assets there’s not a lot that you can do about this.

2nd Passport

Whenever you obtain a second passport however, elements change. If a governing administration wishes to imprison you they will not only will have to give an account to you but also to the actual federal government of your second citizenship. Goverments usually tend to mostly engage in their own citizens, due to the fact chances are they do not have to bother with international relationships so much, consequently if you can demonstrate you are the citizen of another country chances tend to be they might be easy on you and go after some other “hassle-free target” as an alternative. That’s one of the reasons the reason why as a tourist you’ll typically get handled pleasantly by govt administrators.

Opening up an offshore bank account often is the second step to internationalization. Having your complete savings within the same country is a huge liability, mainly because literally with the push of a button the government can have all of your properties and assets frozen while not having to make clear themselves for an extended time. In the U.S. for example the Federal Government can simply freeze and also confiscate your current assets without having to prove their case first. Regardless of whether they’re wrong, they are able to keep your assets for a number of months and months, if not years, before getting them back. Great time for you hiring a legal representative any time all your money in the bank is frozen.

Right now, let’s imagine you do have a part of your own personal savings within an international bank-account overseas, your current federal government simply cannot freeze it having the press of the button, they would need to go through a great deal more trouble whenever they would like your money.

Offshore Bank Account

You are able to open an offshore bank account without having to leave your country, and while quite a few banks require you to deposit $5000, you’ll be able to on many occasions get away with depositing a couple of hundred dollars. There are financial institutions that provide offshore internet banking, which is a pretty handy means of managing ones international accounts from all around the globe.

Creating income streams beyond the borders of your home country is a superb diversification plan, and an offshore company is the perfect method for achieving this.

Introducing Engadget Distro!

Say hello to Engadget Distro. At its most molecular level, it’s nothing more than a series of ones and zeros, cobbled together in a compiler and made to look like words and images on Apple’s iPad. But in reality, it’s something far greater — something that the entire Engadget staff couldn’t be more proud to have their names on. Distro is the week in technology news, distilled down and reformatted into a beautiful, offline view that can be enjoyed anywhere. You know, like one of those regional jets still awaiting their rightful Gogo injection. We’ve got a team of designers and editors toiling around the clock to assemble our best long-form feature content and reviews, re-wrapping it in a fashion that takes full advantage of a little thing called “multitouch.”

As of now, we’ve got plans to launch Distro on the iPad soon (as in, super soon!), but you can bet we’re already hammering away on versions for the other major tablet platforms. Rest assured, we’re as eager to finish them as anyone, and yes, they’ll all be absolutely free of charge. For those who find themselves a touch overwhelmed with the sheer torrent of news that occurs in this space each and every day, Distro offers a relaxing, peaceful alternative. Sort of like morphine, but available sans a prescription. We’ll be showing off a sneak peek during tonight’s live Engadget Show (tune in here!), and we’ll be sure to keep you abreast of our launch date as it draws closer. For now, have a look at what Distro will bring in the video after the break. We hope you enjoy.
